It’s funny how life can steer you away from the things that once defined you. Recently, after my latest blog on “getting off the grog”, I found myself reflecting on what truly matters. For me, that’s been the drive to stay active, push my limits, and set clear goals—even when life throws obstacles in your path.
For years, I’ve been involved in activities that have molded my character. Since 2009, I’ve dedicated myself to jiu jitsu, and before that, I played club rugby and hit the gym regularly. These pursuits didn’t just keep me fit—they taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of a routine. Yet, as a father to three incredible girls and a business owner, time has become a rare commodity. The balance between family, work, and personal passions can feel like juggling fire.
Despite the busy schedule, I have always clung to routines. I still carve out time for jiu jitsu and weight sessions, even if it means squeezing in every spare minute. But four years ago, a nudge from a long-time ultra running friend and fellow BJJ Blackbelt (shout out to Scott Whitfield), sent me on a new adventure—one that would ultimately reshape my perspective on goal-setting.
I took a leap of faith and entered the Blackall 100, a grueling 100km ultra. With my running experience capped at a modest 15km and little preparation, I was setting myself up for a steep challenge. Unsurprisingly, I found myself pulling out at the 50km mark. That failure stung, yet it also served as a valuable lesson in what happens when you lack clear, actionable goals.
Two years later, I decided to give ultra running another shot. This time, I chose the Yandina 5-0, a 50km event. I trained properly, set a tangible target, and crossed the finish line with my good mate Scott. The difference was palpable—not just in my physical endurance but in my mindset. When I had a goal and a plan, I wasn’t just chasing distance; I was reclaiming a piece of myself.
This journey has reinforced a belief I’ve held for a long time: we are far better, more focused humans when we have something to work towards. Goals hold us accountable, make us actionable, and transform our everyday routine into a pursuit of something meaningful. Without these targets, life can feel like a rudderless ship, drifting aimlessly while excuses pile up.
That’s why I’ve decided to get back on the road. I’m setting my sights on another ultra, not merely to break a personal record, but to reinvigorate that drive, that sense of purpose which sometimes gets buried beneath everyday responsibilities. I’m excited to document this journey on social media, sharing the triumphs, setbacks, and lessons learned along the way. My hope is that by sharing my experience, I might inspire a few of you to reconnect with your own passions—whether that’s returning to a sport, learning a new skill, or simply setting a goal that excites you.
In the end, it’s all about prioritising what matters. Life will always have its demands, but amidst the chaos, taking time to pursue our passions not only enriches our own lives but sets a powerful example for those around us. So here’s to goal-setting, to getting off the beaten path, and to rediscovering the things that truly make us feel alive.
Join me on this journey, and let’s remind ourselves that with a clear vision and determined steps, we can achieve more than we ever thought possible.
Stay Strong.
